Why the lake effect snows have been so incredible this week: To get lake effect snow to start, the difference between the lake water temperature and the temp about 4-5k up needs to be about 13°C or more (colder aloft). Because of this abnormally cold air mass early in the year (-18 to -20°C) and the fact that lake temps really havent had a chance to cool off (still 50-55°F/10-13°C in some cases!), the temp difference was more like 25-29°C! The result? Epic snow totals and thundersnow!
