Why, to my mind, GenEd at Presidency University, Kolkata , has huge potential, and has already been partly successful: The Department of English offers a widely popular GedEd module (UG 1, Sem 1) entitled Shakespeare for Everyone. I teach Ran (an epic film, and adaptation of King Lear) by the Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. In the GenEd examination on the same topic, a Physics student (UG 1) wrote the following fascinating sentence: ...like light which on changing medium, changes its wavelength, so also while passing from the stage of the Globe Theater to the canvas of the Japanese film, changes need to be incorporated to adjust the film to the wavelength of the audiences minds.
