Why travelling is so great Several of my friends have journeyed across the world and come back with what they describe as ‘the travel bug’. Now by this they don’t mean an exotic jungle disease or Delhi belly (although I do have an accident prone friend who managed to return from a trip abroad with yellow fever), but rather an addiction to travelling. They love, almost to the point of obsession, the discovery of new places and the exploration of new cultures. They revel in new experiences which at home can only be read about in magazines or in travel agent brochures. So what is so great about travel? I have a friend who is amazed every time I book a new holiday, spending all of my hard earned money from the previous few months. In return I tell them that while some girls go out and spend their pay cheque on a new Mulberry handbag, the pleasure they feel whilst proudly carrying this exquisite bag in their hand is the same pleasure that I feel whilst holding a coconut in mine. A sliced open coconut filled with cocktail on a hot beach far away that is. For me it is simple. Travelling is an escape. A week or two to truly relax and have no cares. There is no work, no deadlines and no responsibility, except for trying to retain all of your belongings (and all of your travelling party) for the duration of the trip. You suddenly have time to do all those things you’ve wanted to do in the past few months, like read that new book or listen to your new CD. To do these things whilst lying on golden sand under a palm tree or around a swimming pool on a deckchair is a bonus. All the ‘treats’ back home, for example visiting theme parks or water parks, can now be visited on a daily basis. Going out clubbing, usually reserved for once a week at the weekend, can now happen every day if you wish (and are feeling hardcore). There are so many opportunities to meet new people and see their different ways of life. Every view appears more beautiful than the last. The only bad thing about travelling is that the trips (usually) have to end. But photos and memories can last forever, and documenting your travels is part of the fun. Sharing your experiences not only benefits yourself but also your friends and families who may want to visit similar places or know more about your trip. This is where we come in.
