Why was Obama visit important. Indias demand for electricity is far beyond the present existing capacities or what we can possibly generate through our thermal plants. The Coal variety which we have is of very poor grade and one cannot depend on Coal for long due to supplies, prices and environment constraints. We need Atomic Energy to meet the demand. The demand of rural India and that of the infrastructure and industry. And Atomic Energy is infinite. France draws 90% of its energy from Atomic. In USA majority energy is from Atomic. So inspite of having a nuclear deal with USA, we need technology and partners to install the Atomic Energy plants. These partners want relaxation in safety norms. The safety norms made by INdia were highly idealistic and stringent. There were debates in the Energy Commission itself about these norms. With a little relaxation, Narendra Modi has been able to get USA to agree to the Atomic Energy deals. With USA getting ready, it is not long before UK, France, Germany and Australia gie us their consent. What Obama said, that what started with MMS Government now ends with the NaMO Government. INdeed a successful visit.
