Why we need the public to advocate for a comprehensive habitat assessment in the Waterfront District: City staff has convinced the council that the nearshore restoration plan they are implementing in lieu of an environmental assessment of habitat and wildlife is fine. It is not. Restoration addresses past damage and is a public subsidy of development. But an environmental assessment and baseline standard of existing wildlife and habitat addresses current development impacts, ensures that the developers are responsible for the cost of their impacts through mitigation, and prevents future declines in ecological function. Seriously, how hard is it to understand that these are two very different things?
