Why we want Amaechi impeached —anti Amaechi lawmakers Hon. Evans Bipi, the leader of the six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly opposed to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, yesterday insisted that the governor has committed a lot of impeachable offences. The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, at a news briefing in Port Harcourt yesterday, had alleged that six opposition lawmakers were sitting at two different locations, including a hotel, in a bid to impeach the governor. According to Semenitari: “The Rivers State government is all more worried, as the Ondo saga is coming on the heels of a plot by six PDP lawmakers this morning (Thursday) to carry out a kangaroo impeachment of the duly elected governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, first at Krisdara Hotels and later Bauchi Street, Port Harcourt,” she said, describing such move as illegal and unconstitutional. But Bipi, in a telephone chat with our correspondent yesterday, said that the governor had committed a lot of impeachable offences, pointing out that the six lawmakers had the right to unseat Amaechi. He listed some of the alleged impeachable offences committed by the governor as interference in the activities of the state judiciary, illegal borrowing of money from banks, and allowing lawmakers loyal to him to sit at the Government House, Port Harcourt. Bipi, who was picked as speaker by the five lawmakers opposed to the governor in the wake of the crisis rocking the State House of Assembly, alleged that Amaechi was afraid of impeachment because he was not doing the right thing. The state chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, has however debunked claims of a plot to impeach Amaechi, describing the claim as untrue and fallacious.
