Wife and I began taking steps towards homesteading. Like many, we did it to be self sufficient and eat healthier. Ive been disappointed at how most self sufficient people actually raise and grow their own food, much like commercial operations do. They start raising their own chickens, goats, ducks, bunnies, etc to eliminate processed food. Then they feed processed (commercial feed) food to their livestock. Grow their own veggies to eliminate chemicals, but pump their garden with pesticides. At the beginning I was seeking advice. Now Im just relying on what I learned from my family in Mexico. No commercial feed, no worries about percentage or balances. Even in winter (Chihuahua gets same average temp as Colorado minus the snow), livestock eats what nature provides and what is left from the harvest. Animals werent caged, they had free reign of the properties. Predators? Very rarely were they an issue. It was starting to get stressful worrying about what others warned about... its better to do what grandpa and God did: let animals be animals. My job is to appreciate them, grow (not buy) food for them, provide clean environment, and learn from them. Animals will tell you what they need and when they need it. Crops are the same. Grandpa just planted, and became good at it. Pesticides? They were lucky to get rain many times. You cant eat healthier when you treat the food you grow/raise the same way commercial operations do. Our ancestors didnt have commercial feed or pesticides, and they made that shit happen. Cant be self sufficient when you rely on commercial products.
