Wigan 41 Whitehaven 7 Cumbria & North Lancs Saturday September 13th Wigans first home game in the new league saw the side achieve a comfortable 41-7 win over Whitehaven. The home forwards had control over a bigger outfit, whilst the Wigan backs, who were the difference, attacked at will and cut through the Whitehaven defence more and more as the game progressed. Man of the match Matty Price showed blistering pace and Danny Winrow once again showed great form. Martin Gambles opened the scoring with a try following a break by Price, the captain going over in the corner, and from turn over ball Winrow outpaced the opposition defence with a searing run for the second, Price adding the conversion. Following a break by Matt Gregory with Gambles in close support great interpassing between Matt Jeffrey, Lewis Connell and Winrow afforded the opportunity for Jeffrey to touch down for the third, Price again on hand with the extras. Gambles brought up the bonus try after Mike Rigby had cut through the Whitehaven defence with the conversion again from Price closing the half 26-0 in Wigans favour. Wigan were quickly off the mark in the second period, a strong run by Sam Beever put Connell in at the corner and from a strong rolling maul, taking play right up to the line from 22 metres out, Rigby peeled off to force his way over. In the final quarter Wigan began to ease off and were found wanting when from a series of strong rolling mauls, Whitehaven eventually forced their way over for a consolation converted try. However, the visitors hit back through Beever, going over for a sixth try after a strong run down the right.
