Wignacourt Tower receives a facelift Restoration work proceeds at the Wignacourt Tower at St Paul’s Bay which is soon to celebrate its 405th anniversary. The external walls of the tower are being restored with the support of the ERDF Funds for Sustainable Tourism by the Malta Tourism Authority project in collaboration with Din l-Art Helwa, the NGO that manages this historic site in guardianship. Wignacourt Tower is the earliest coastal watch tower still standing in Malta and was built by Grand Master Wignacourt in 1610. In devotion to Malta’s patron saint, its foundation stone was laid on the 10th February of the same year. Stanley Farrugia Randon, who is Din l-Art Ħelwa’s warden for Wignacourt Tower said, ‘This expensive and extensive conservation work is just an example of the continued effort necessary to save our built heritage for posterity. We could not allow Din l-Art Ħelwa’s 50th anniversary to go by without giving this magnificent tower a proper facelift and are grateful to MTA for its collaboration’.
