Wilderness Expedition Ten VCAL students had a wonderful experience in May 2014 when they canoed the Murray River for nine days. Nine, eighteen hour days of paddling, setting up camp every night, cooking their own meals, cooperating with each other and sharing their stories. Eight nights without showers toilets or a comfy bed! It was such a challenge and they all made it! They had been preparing since February, planning the route and getting fit with caving, abseiling, rock climbing and white water kayaking. As well as being physically demanding, this expedition made huge emotional demands on our young people who were away from their families and banned from using any technology, including mobile phones! They supported each other when they “hit the wall” and learned much about themselves as well as their peers and teachers. When leaving, the young people were asked to think about what parts of their life they would like to leave behind and much of the success of the experience can be found in their exploration of personal changes they could make. Enormous congratulations to the young people and their teachers: Katrina Sawyer and Tracey Wood who supported their students every step of the way. Massive thanks to EACH Wilderness program and in particular their wonderful staff Matthew Franks and Shannon Grass who led the expedition. Suzanne Crellin Youth Programs Manager
