Wildland Fire In Montana City Monday A five acre wildland fire near a subdivision on the west side of Montana City sent fire crews scrambling to respond before homes could be affected by the fast-moving, wind-driven grass fire that also scorched trees. In addition to Montana City resources, Clancy VFD, Jefferson City VFD, Eastgate VFD, DNRC, and U.S. Forest Service personnel and trucks (including one Forest Service crew from Townsend) also helped with the effort. A DNRC helicopter with a 300 gallon bucket repeatedly retrieved and dropped water (from a nearby pond) onto the blaze, hammering the flames from above. Four water tenders repeatedly filled fire trucks so crews could keep attacking the flames with water in addition to using hand tools. Eagle Ambulance was staged nearby in case they were needed. Jefferson County Sheriffs Deputy Dean Hildebrand provided traffic control to the scene. DNRC Fire Supervisor John Huston and MCVFD Fire Chief Rick Abraham managed the incident. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Jefferson County residents are reminded that wildland fire season does not end until snow or rain stays on the ground. Please be extremely careful if you choose to burn slash or yard debris, ensuring you have checked the weather forecast, have an open burn permit, water and hand tools available. Do not leave your fire unattended! For more information, go to montanacityfire.org and click on the Open Burning tab on the left.
