Wildlife Field Technician: Canada goose study Description: The technician will assist an SDSU graduate student in studying the effects of Avipel® on Canada geese in northeastern South Dakota. Duties will include, but are limited to: study site selection, contacting landowners/renters, identification of crop damage from Canada geese, electric fence construction, trail camera set up and monitoring, chemical applications, residue sampling, and visual damage estimates. This position offers the technician an opportunity to help on some ground breaking research that can truly make a difference here in South Dakota as well as throughout the world! Duration: The position will be from approximately May 15, 2014 to August 15, 2014. Hours: The technician will work an average of 40 hours per week. The work schedule and number of hours per week will be variable according to weather and research conditions. At times there will be some night and possibly weekend hours. A flexible schedule is required. Location: The study area is Day County, South Dakota. Housing will be provided in Webster, SD which is located 90 minutes northwest of Brookings and about 45 minutes from Watertown and Aberdeen, SD. Local amenities include a grocery store, post office, hardware store, gas stations, restaurants as well as entertainment such as a movie theater, golf course, and many amazing fishing opportunities. Pay: $10 per hour, 40 hours per week, Skills required: Applicants should possess or be pursuing a degree in wildlife biology or a related field. Applicants must have a strong work ethic, be trustworthy, and be able to work independently and efficiently. Often working near wetlands, the technician will be exposed to mosquitoes, ticks, horseflies, etc. and must be able be physically able to work under adverse conditions such as extreme heat, humidity, and wind. The applicant must be able to drive ATVs and UTVs safely while multitasking. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license as well as be able to use county plat books and other maps to navigate.
