Wildlife Wednesday: Listen to bat eating an insect! As part of a bat survey this summer at Wind Cave National Park, detectors recorded the ultrasonic echolocation calls made by bats when flying and hunting for their insect prey. The sound you’re hearing is an Eastern Red Bat (seen in the inserted photo). Usually, these echolocation calls are above the range of human hearing, but here software electronically lowers the call into the range of human hearing. At the 8 second mark on the tape, you can hear a feeding buzz indicating the bat closing in and catching an insect in flight. These detectors record echolocation calls that allow computer software to identify the type of species. As a result of this survey, the park identified 9 different species. (dr)
