Wildlife charity urges everybody to vote for Weetslade Country Park! The Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for parks and green spaces, is urging everyone to show their support for their local park or green space as voting for the nation’s favourite park reaches the final stages. The People’s Choice Award is an annual online vote that gives the public the power to decide which one of the 1,448 parks or green spaces flying the Green Flag Award or Community Award this year, should be named the site of the year. Competition to reach the top spot is expected to be fierce and Northumberland Wildlife Trust is urging everybody in the Region to get voting to ensure Weetslade Country Park gets the recognition it deserves. Weetslade Country Park, just north of Gosforth Park, is a wonderful green space on the outskirts of Newcastle. The former Weetslade Colliery site is one of a record number of parks and green spaces receiving the Green Flag Award, earlier this month, for the third year running, ensuring that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces. Weetslade Country Park is managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust and its team of volunteers on behalf of the Land Trust. Developed on the former pit heap of Weetslade Colliery, the shallow sloping sides of the hill contain areas of grassland, scrub and woodland. At the foot of the slopes to the west side of the site there are three developing reed beds, home to many common damselflies and dragonflies. Many birds are present on the site such as grey partridge, meadow pipit and skylark. Duncan Hutt, Head of Land Management at Northumberland Wildlife Trust said: “This is a great opportunity for members of the public to support their local green space and show their appreciation to the The Land Trust and also the army of Northumberland Wildlife Trust volunteers who tirelessly manage the site for everybody to enjoy.” Simply visit greenflagaward.org.uk to register your vote. The vote will close at midday on 1st October and the winner of the 2013 People’s Choice will be announced on 9th October at a ceremony in London.
