Wilf Tomlinson posted in Facebook Page of Positive Action Group -ISLE OF MAN VOTER REGISTRATION LOOPHOLE? Remember the brouhaha about voter registration during the #iom 2010 Douglas East by-election? Well a sharp eyed Manx resident has unearthed what may potentially be a serious loophole in people registering to vote in the SCOTTISH REFERENDUM. In response to an article in the Scotsman bit.ly/1Ay8ZYF he writes: I read the letter from, Helen MD McPhee, Assessor and Electoral Registration Office, South Ayrshire Council, with some astonishment. Ms McPhee explains that is is possible for parents to register a child to vote, via post or proxy, without declaring the child’s age. Quite simply, this can happen as the Electoral Registration Office cannot reject an application to vote, in the referendum only, if the voter declines to state their date of birth. I checked the Scottish Independence Referendum Young Voter Registration Form on the Council website. This states that: ‘If you are concerned that inclusion on the register may affect your personal safety, or you do not wish to register using your current address, other registration options may be available. You may be able to use a previous address or to register anonymously. Fairly obviously, being able to register anonymously means that additional votes can be cast without any fear of sanction. Significantly, as the voter registration process changes the day after the referendum the loophole will be history after that date. Is there a ‘word on the street’ with some large extended families that they can create extra votes with impunity? Surely this matter deserves immediate and close attention. If the referendum result is agonisingly close then irregularities in voter registration could be crucial. There would be little likelihood, I think, of a re vote.
