Will Elephants Survive Beyond the Year 2020? Since the international ban on ivory was lifted in 2000 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, African and other elephant species are being slaughtered for their ivory at a pace that is alarming. Animal welfare advocates warned over and over that this would happen, even though the treaty allowed only stock-piled ivory, ivory from legally culled or natural death or the re-selling of old ivory. It created a black market that is insatiable. The new “white gold” it is called. The reason for this appears to be multi-fold. Greed, ignorance, poverty, lack of public awareness and not enough laws and protective forces in place. This is why I am so very proud of organizations like the one that my friend, Barbara Steen Tang operates, to help end the lack of education and poverty in Africa and other countries. ‘All People Be Happy’ is the name of this cause, and it has served well to open libraries, provide medical care and self-empowerment for many people around the world to become educated and self-efficient economically. Below is some more information of All People Be Happy as well as other sources for references to the history and causes of elephant poaching. Together, we can all work to raise awareness for these causes and make the world a happy place for all people and animals. In memory and honor of Eric Tang, who originally started the organization All People Be Happy, with a vision and purpose that has succeeded way beyond expectations. Eric did more in his 25 years than most do in a life-time. His dream, and the fulfillment of it continues.
