Will Jets fans accept Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback? Recently Kristian Dyer of Metro New York wrote a very interesting article regarding the development of New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith. Mr. Dyer provided a thorough explanation of the challenges Smith will be facing in his first season, with a focus on the transition of primarily taking snaps from under center. (Note: Geno Smith played mostly out of the shotgun formation at West Virginia). From Dyer: “It is more than just a different way of lining up. The speed of the game, and the pass rush in particular, is much different under center. Whether a 3-step drop, 5-step drop or even a 7-step drop, a quarterback will feel the rush off the edge and from the gaps much faster than in the shotgun where the depth of the snap gives him an extra moment to scan the field.” “As he drops back from under center, the quarterback must scan the field not only for the pass rush but also to begin his progression. There’s his “hot read” as well as the secondary reads and his outlet pass. All this must be done while the football is secured and he has taken his steps back in the pocket. In short, his footwork must be automatic, because mentally he must read the field as he drops back. Otherwise, he’s picking himself up off the turf at the end of the play.” The challenges outlined above along with Smith’s performance at mini camp have some, including Dyer, believing that Mark Sanchez will be starting week one of the regular season. Yes the same Mark Sanchez that has become public enemy #1 to most Jets fans. So the question is how would Jets fans react to Sanchez being named the starter to begin the season? Would they embrace Sanchez and give him a chance in a new offense with an improved offensive coaching staff? Or will the Jets faithful start booing with the first incompletion? My guess is that the decision to start Mark Sanchez would not go over well as there is a tremendous amount of negativity surrounding the signal caller. Most have written Sanchez off as a lost cause and are ready to move on to any other guy that can throw a pass. And lets be honest the media will love every second of this and will fuel the fans fires even more. My take is this: If Sanchez is clearly the better quarterback in training camp he should be named the starter. There is no sense forcing Geno Smith on the field if he is not ready. If Mark is indeed named the starter, I will support him with hopes that he can be productive and lead the Jets to victory. I think that offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will put Sanchez in positions to succeed, something that may not have happened in the past. Now will Mark Sanchez play at a higher level? Well that is a different story entirely. All I know is that a “boo-fest” week one at MetLife would not be productive for the Jets on or off the field.
