Will everyone PLEASE, stop using the term "Obamaphone"? I am no supporter of Obama, but he had very damned little to do with the program. Just so you know, the Universal Service Fund was enacted in 1997 and added to the bills of mobile device access as a "fee" (meaning tax) in order to fund several programs, one of which is the Lifeline program, which is intended to provide inexpensive telephones to low income families so that they can have a telephone in case of emergencies. It has very few of the bells and whistles that most people want with their cell phone, such as voice mail, internet or a huge amount of minutes. Those can be purchased at an additional cost. Yes, some of the Obama supporters made a huge point of the "cheap phones" during the 2012 election. But, it has been around for 16 years now, so if you want to blame someone, you can blame Clinton for passing it, and Bush for not doing something to stop it. This is just one more of the programs that SUDDENLY people dislike because Obama is in office. Where were you opposing it when Bush was there? I did.
