Will the Last Full Measure be produced? The announcement of the new Civil War Classics series has prompted lots of queries about LFM. The film rights are held jointly by Jeff Shaara and Ron Maxwell. In any incarnation, movie or mini-series, the project would require a major financial investment, upwards of fifty million dollars. As a point of reference, Gods & Generals cost sixty four million dollars to film in 2001. There are no plans afoot to produce LFM at this time. The good news is that someday some filmmaker can still make LFM as a movie or mini-series. Its a terrific book that is deserving of a big screen treatment. I understand perfectly that many would like to follow Lee, Longstreet, the Chamberlain brothers, Hancock, Stuart and others to the wars climax at Appomattox. Its perfectly Okay that when the day comes it may be made by someone other than myself. Each of these projects has a life of its own. Sometimes it takes decades for a literary work to reach the screen, sometimes centuries. Were building cinematic cathedrals, which take generations to create. All any of us can do, if we are lucky, is build one of those beautiful stained glass windows, one at a time. Our new series of Civil War Classics are shards of colored glass for this window in time.
