William Ayers, former distinguished professor of education and senior university scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will be the first guest of Elgin Community College’s 2013-2014 Humanities Center Speaker Series on Thursday, Sept. 26. He will speak from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the Building B Community Room at ECC’s Spartan Drive Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The event is free and open to the public. The Speaker Series offers our students opportunities to interact with speakers on their views and form their own opinions based on their knowledge of the issues. We feel it is important to allow these discussions on college campuses, where issues and topics can be discussed and analyzed in an educational setting. This does not mean the college endorses the viewpoints of the speakers. Although we recognize that Mr. Ayers is a controversial figure, we believe our students have the right to ask him about his views and form their own opinions on the issues.
