William Basinski’s been making ambient and experimental music for years. He was in the process of transferring old tape loops of found sounds onto digital formats when he discovered that the actual ferrite of the tapes was so old it was detaching from the plastic tape backing as it passed along the tape heads. What you’re hearing is the sound of the tape actually decaying as it was being saved. He finished the project on the morning of September 11th, 2001. As the Towers collapsed he watched from his rooftop in Brooklyn in horror. He later set up a camera to film the gouts of smoke and dust billowing from the wreckage while simultaneously playing ‘disintegration loop 1’. This recording runs for an hour. Grab a chair. It perfectly fits the elegiac mood of the past week, both as orison as well as a re-focusing.
