William D. Lash was born in 1836 in Athens County Ohio. He attended the Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1871. In 1878 he was elected as school superintendent in Zanesville. He served in this position for 33 years. The new high school was designed by local Architect, Harry C. Meyer,,featuring tile floors provided by Mosaic Tile Co.,opened its doors on January 2nd 1908 & was named in his honor,, Lash High School. It remained the High School until1954 when it became known as Hancock School.until being demolished in the early 80s. The William Lash home built in 1872 still stands on Dresden Road,,
