William Howard Reed, 85, of Chula Vista, California, passed away on November 21, 2014 as the result of a stroke. Bill was born on February 20, 1929 in Fort Collins, Colorado to Howard E. “Bill” Reed and Lucille Beedy. Lucille died of complications of childbirth and so his step-mother Alma raised him. “Billy” grew up in Loveland, Colorado where he excelled in academics and athletics, received awards for essays and lettered in football, basketball and track at Loveland High School (Class of ’47). Bill also attended the University of Colorado, where he played football and lettered in track. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1951 and later a Master of Arts and a PhD in Education. Bill proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty between 1951 and 1953, and continued reserve service. He attained the rank of major. Bill and his family lived in Boulder, Colorado, where he served as a teacher, coach, counselor, and vice principal at Boulder High School (1953–1970) and Fairview High School (1972–1984). Bill also served as Principal at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico for the 1971 – 72 academic year. Bill loved sports and was an accomplished recreational runner, enjoyed reading and kept up with current events. He loved to play his harmonica on the porch and had a long-time interest in Native American arts and history. He also relished skiing and hiking in Colorado and New Mexico. A special thank you to the various care givers from recent years, particularly Rachel Rodrigues and Everr Lee Ford as well as all the folks at Sunrise Bonita who helped Bill care for Marylin and are still helping care for her during her battle with Alzheimers disease. A California service for Bill will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, 3990 Bonita Road, Bonita, California on December 20th (time tbd), and a graveside service for internment of ashes will be held at the Loveland Lakeside Cemetery and Burial Grounds, Loveland Colorado, Highway 287, on January 30th at 2:00pm, followed by a reception (location to be announced). Memorial donations may be made to the William (Bill) Reed Scholarship Fund, which will be developed to support a deserving scholar-athlete from Loveland, Boulder, and/or Santa Fe.
