William Lee Porteous (April 15, 1920 - August 11, 2010 U.S. Veteran William L. Porteous age 90 of Reed City passed away Wednesday August 11 2010 at Spectrum Hospital, Reed City. He was born April 15, 1920 near LeRoy and was a 1937 graduate of Reed City High School. He served with the US Army during WWII in Panama, retiring in 1947 with the rank of Major. Contracting polio at age 25 did not slow Bill. Following his marriage to Mable Hamlin in 1943 he returned to Reed City in 1948 to join his father at the Reed City State Bank to begin a career spanning nearly 40 years, serving as President and Chairman of the Board from 1970 until his retirement in 1987. Active in his community Bill served on numerous boards including the United Methodist Church Trustees, Eagle Village Board of Directors, the Scenic Trails Council of Boy Scouts of America in addition to being active in Osceola County Community Foundation, Reed City Rotary and Chamber of Commerce among many others. His passion was the Rails to Trails effort and he founded the Crossroads Trail Committee in Reed City which spurred completion of the trail development in Reed City and beyond, earning him the name “Father of the White Pine Trail” for his commitment. He is survived by Mable Porteous his wife of 67 years; children Ruth (Tom) Hamilton of Va., Bill (Liz Weber) of Ma., David (Joan) of Reed City and Jane Schimmels of Reed City. Grandchildren: Cameron Hamilton, Diane (Colin Meeks) Hamilton, Dawn Hamilton, Hannagh Porteous, Nathan Porteous, Laura (Paul) McMahon, David Porteous, Mark Porteous, Sarah (Paul) Clifford, Rachel Schimmels, and Paul Schimmels; great-granddaughters: Corallus Meeks and Kelly McMahon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday August 17, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church, Reed City with Rev. Emmett Kadwell officiating. Graveside services will be held 5:00 PM Tuesday at Woodland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the William L. Porteous Scholarship at Reed City High School, Rails to Trails c/o City of Reed City, or the United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the Pruitt-Livingston Funeral Home, Reed City where friends may call Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 PM.
