William Onyeabor Vinyl Box Sets Just Released From Luaka Bop! Hot off the press! Brand new box sets of all William Onyeabors albums! The good folks at David Byrnes record label Luaka Bop in NYC have just released two box sets which chronicle the work of Nigerian musician/filmmaker William Onyeabor. The vinyl box sets, released as Box Set #1 and Box Set #2, contain reissues of all eight of Onyeabors electronic funk synthesizer-driven masterpieces from the late 70s to mid 80s. This is a follow up to the highly successful Luaka Bop comp Who Is William Onyeabor released in 2013. Onyeabor was light years ahead of his time when he began creating music in his own Wilfilms Studios in Enugu, Nigeria in the 1970s. He had a state-of-the-art recording studio replete with various synthesizers, which at the time, were instruments that were completely foreign to West Africa due to their high cost and difficult maintenance. Onyeabor prevailed and created some of the most intense funk-laden interstellar grooves to come out of West Africa at the time. After having released eight albums, Onyeabor became a recluse, hid behind the veil of religion and was almost forgotten by the African music scene. His albums were only known to a handful of DJs around the world, but one thing was for certain; whenever these DJs threw down one of William Onyeabors tracks, the joint was jumpin! Kudos to Luaka Bop for unearthing all eight of Onyeabors classic albums. The two box sets are only available in a limited pressing of 3000 each, so we advise that you get out to your local record store sooner rather than later in order to scoop them up as they will most definitely sell out!
