Wilson Fishing Live fibre Venom 6’6” PE 2-8. I was recently introduced to the art of Fun Fishing “Float lining on small gear for snapper” by Greg Pearce, He was using a 20+ year old Live Fibre O/H with a Saltiga 20 SD, have a go Dick he said I did & I was hooked. Arriving home I looked at what O/H outfits stood in my rack to find a Venom 2-8 couple to an offshore reel, straight on the phone to Clint from Wilsons yeh Dick it will do it but it’s on the upper end of what you want ……… all I heard was yes it will do it. Dropped a Ld20 Saltist on it & returned to DI for what turned out to be one of the best afternoon sessions I have had for a while, the rod defiantly felt more capable than the 30lb I had matched it with. Fast fwd 2 weeks I returned in pursuit of more Snapper with a Saltiga LD30 spooled with 50lb Braid “insert smiley face here” Fishing was slow due to the NW conditions so I rigged the Venom with 7766 6o’s ganged for Pillies a proven snapper set up, it felt well balanced now with the bigger reel & heavier Braid. It had lost none of it’s touch bringing smaller reefies onboard one after another. Hoping for a good snap the rod buckled over, smiles all round this was where the Venom started to shine it was stiff enough to get the fish out of the reef quickly yet forgiving to absorb the powerful runs. Hi five a good Red !!! The next day we travelled nth to hide from the wind finding an isolated school of bait being harassed by Aj’s, Steve hooked up on what turned out to be a 20kg Aj on his Spin version of the same Venom, so hooks where replaced with jigs & dispatched below. Not sure this will work mate 6’6” rods jigging zzzzzzzz 1 hr later we both made the call to drive away exhausted fish after fish where caught & released what a fun session. With fading light we made to call for a quick reef drop, Jig’s where swapped back to Hooks & we headed to a mark I pulled good fish last trip, first drop a big Maori Cod nailed my Pillie, followed by a stonker 71cm Pearly then a great 11kg Red. Steve managed to grab his new Cod pb with a horse gold spot every drop landed a fish. We had fished past our last drop call by half an hr so we pulled the pick & steamed in. To say I was impressed by the Venom would be understating the obvious, if you have been sitting on the fence trying to decide this is a rod you can Float line, Bottom bash, Jig & troll. It ticks a lot of boxes compared to most other specialized sticks. It is a great rod to start your venom collection with. Cheers Dick
