His mother and father were chubby and strong. They had arrived from Puerto Rico on a boat load of fruits many years ago . Tito was very skinny because he did not eat the food that he found in the neighborhoods sidewalks. One day Tito told his mother that he wanted to be strong like his father. His mother told him that to get strong he had to eat coconut meat. Tito asked. - Where do I find the coconut meat?. And his mother said. - On the beaches of Puerto Rico. A very cold and snowy December, Tito went to Puerto Rico to spend Christmas with his grandparents. They live in the Luquillo, a town named to honor a Taino cacique called Loquillo. This Taino chief participated in the last rebellion of the Taino people in 1513 and died some years later. The town of Luquillo is known as The Capital of the Sun and The Rivera of Puerto Rico. It is ten minutes from the Yunque, the only tropical rain forest in the National Forest System in the United States. From the mountains of El Yunque you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. In Luquillo, Tito found a new friend named Pedrito. This was a mouse of the same age as Tito. Pedrito never left his town and knew all the places and corners of the northeast coast of the island. Tito told Pedrito. - I want to go to the beach to look for coconuts and eat of its meat. I want to be as strong as my father. The next day, in the morning, Pedrito and Tito went to Luquillo Beach. This beach is a coconut plantation. The scientific name for these trees is Cocos nucifera. They can grow up to ninety-eight feet tall and live for a hundred years or more. The fruit of this tree is called coco, because its seed looks like a human face or a head of a monkey. In Sanskrit it is called Kalpa Vrisha, which means the tree which gives all that is necessary to live. Tito was amazed with the large number of coconut palms and how high were the fruits. Pedrito said. - In order to eat the meat we have to climb in the palm, find a dry coconut and open a hole with our teeth and nails. We get into the fruit, eat the meat, and take the little water that remains in the coconut . Tito asked how they would climb on those trees so high. Pedrito replied. - Follow me and do not look down. Pedrito and Tito began to climb in one of the trees. Tito at no time looked down. Already in the tree they found a dry coconut. They opened the hole with their little teeth aided by the nails and go inside the fruit. Tito was surprised with all the coconut meat around him. He ate as much as he could and drank some of the small amount of water that remained in the coconut. When Tito was over, he went through the hole and saw that he was closer to heaven than earth. He got scared and ran back into the coconut. Very agitated and trembling he told his friend. - Pedrito! And how do we get down from here? We are Almost touching the clouds! Pedrito smiled and said. - Tito, you gotta calm down. Everythings fine. No problems. Rest and sleep a little. Tonight we will get down from the tree. Tito did not understand and asked back to how they were going to do it, if it was more difficult in the dark. Pedrito explained. - Look, after we rest and sleep a little, we just have to jump a lot inside this coconut, side to side, up and down. That way we can release the coconut from the bunch of fruits. The coconut falls and we will go down with it. Nothing will happen. The coconut still have lots of coconut meat and will protect us from all bad. Tito rubbed his face and his head. He did not understand anything. He asked himself. - What? How, He slept with the doubt and a belly full of meat and coconu twater. Night came and Pedrito woke him up. Asked him how he felt. Tito told him that he was very well and rested. Pedrito said that it was time to get off the mat. They began to skip and jump from side to side, up and down. The coconut loosen and suddenly broke off and fell in the sand that cushioned the blow. Tito could not believe that nothing happened to them. No tap, no black and blues, or any little scratch. He looked at his friend inside the coconut and said very excited. - Pedrito, That was awesome!. This is an unforgettable day! And we still have the coco. Tito returned to New York and Pedrito stayed in Puerto Rico. Tito tells about his adventure in every corner of the neighborhood. Pedrito still climbs coconut palm trees in Luquillo. Wilson R.
