Wilson defends Tobago Open title Story Updated: Sep 19, 2013 Fourteen-year-old Aaron Wilson will defend his Tobago Open Table Tennis Tournament men’s singles title at the Scarborough Secondary School, on Sunday. Wilson captured the crown last year with an impressive triumph over top-ranked Trinidad and Tobago player Curtis Humphreys in the championship match. While Humphreys will be the main contender for Wilson’s title in the 2013 edition of the tournament, there are other players in the draw capable of claiming the top prize. The list includes 15-year-old Arun Roopnarine, Everton Sorzano, two-time Caribbean champion Lionel Darceuil, five-time national champion Reeza Burke and Humphreys’ brother, Alaric Humphreys. United States-based Nazruddin Asgarali is home for the tournament, and with no ranking points here in T&T could prove to be an unseeded spoiler in the draw. Reigning women’s singles champion Ashley Quashie is a recent T&T Defence Force recruit, and is not expected to defend her title on Sunday. Last year’s runner-up, Natalie Montes is also a non-starter. National senior team players, Linda Partap-Boodhan, Aleena Edwards and Jasher De Gannes, who turns 12 tomorrow (Friday), are among the players who will bid for Quashie’s crown. All three would be confident going into the tournament, having contributed to the country’s women’s team success at last month’s Caribbean Championships, in St Lucia. In addition to team gold, Edwards earned women’s singles bronze, while De Gannes combined with France-based Rheann Chung for women’s doubles silver. Fifteen-year-old Brittany Joseph, the 2012 national women’s singles champion, is also expected to be in contention for the top prize.Tobago Open age-group champions will be crowned on Saturday, the opening day of the tournament. Wilson, Roopnarine, De Gannes and Joseph are expected to feature in winners’ row in the age-group events. In addition to the Tobago Open men’s and women’s singles, there will be Solo National Junior Championship under-15 mixed doubles action at Scarborough Secondary on Sunday. The under-15 mixed doubles champions were not decided when the National Junior Championships were staged earlier this month, in Tacarigua. First serve on Saturday will be at 9.30 a.m. And on Sunday, the mixed doubles event is scheduled to start at 8.30 a.m., while Tobago Open action is likely to get going about an hour later. Express
