Winchester Poetry Festival, which is happening today and over the weekend (12-14 September), has three interwoven themes: to commemorate the poetry of the First World War, to celebrate Hampshire’s contribution to our literary heritage and to bring together a fine array of leading contemporary poets. Edward Thomas, who died at the Battle of Arras in 1917, exemplifies these themes and his life and work will be celebrated in a talk by Edna Longley and a small exhibition associated with the poet. ‘ROADS FROM HAMPSHIRE’: THE POETRY OF EDWARD THOMAS will take place at Winchester Discovery Centre at 12noon on Sunday 14 September. Professor Edna Longley, one of the leading critics on modern Irish and British poetry and a powerful voice in contemporary Irish culture, is an acknowledged authority on the life and work of Edward Thomas. In this lecture she shares her enthusiasm for Hampshire’s foremost poet. Professor Longley is the author and editor of many books and editions (Bloodaxe, Faber, Carcanet, Blackstaff) including Poetry in the Wars, Louis MacNeice: a Study, Edward Thomas: the Annotated Collected Poems, and most recently Yeats and Modern Poetry (CUP, 2014). The talk is presented in association with the Edward Thomas Fellowship. For further information on Winchester Poetry Festival and to book tickets see winchesterpoetryfestival.org
