Windhoek: gold dig or go home by Linekela Halwoodi Tue, 27 August 2013 01:19 Everyone who came to Windhoek from any small village for tertiary education will testify the city can change you for the better or worse; mostly the worst. If you are a voluptuous girl from some unheard-of village in the North or South with thick dark hair and legs that go on for days, then only two things can happen. You will either end up with a family in some small house on the hill overlooking the city with no meals some nights and big belly politicians lurking around your skirt. Or you will be taken in by a family that has been touched by an angel and won’t mistreat you. I am telling you 50% of those girls you see working to make their own money now five years after studying, were, at some point, near indirect prostitution. Lord knows rent is way too expensive in the city, everybody cares only about their own hustle so one little broken down room in some wack part of Katutura can cost more than your entire family’s possessions. Then there is the peer pressure, all these other girls or even guys in class with you would be keeping up with the latest London and New York trends while you only get a shirt or two from your sister who works as a police officer in the North or South. Yes, life is hard! You will find yourself in a romantic relationship in exchange for a good wardrobe and salon care. For guys, if you have been exposed to the “Katutura Mentality”, then you might end up fingering people in town at month-end to keep up with ADIDAS. Yes, life is just tough that way! For guys, you can look forward to spending some time in jail while girls may find themselves in abusive but lucrative relationships from which they cannot quit. Do not forget that you will run into those guys with the dirty ALL STAR shoes once in a while. So be prepared to lose a shoe or a phone once in a while. The Namibian con artists here are also more than Nigerian scammers on Yahoo! So if someone tries to sell you something that looks too good to be true, then that is because it probably is. So when you find yourself sleeping under a bridge or eating only twice a week, gold-dig or go home!
