Winding down all the fun stuff and getting ready for tomorrow! Not that tomorrow wont be fun...! As all the band directors do, let me hit you with my numbers right quick: Tomorrow will be my 18th band camp as a high school band director (14th as band director at Princess Anne), 21st year of teaching camp (going back to my college years), and it has been 27 years since my first band camp as a 14 year-old kid with Scott Werts, Amanda Pritchett, and Jennifer Dawn in 1988 at La Plata High School. We had our smallest marching band in my time at Princess Anne last year year, and graduated 23 seniors (and had another 3 kids not return). But we are bigger this year. So: LOTS of rookies. But the horn-line and front ensemble sound awesome-sauce! We have work to do in the battery and the guard, but they show definitive and obvious signs of improvement every time theyve rehearsed. Well see where they are at the Preview Show on August 20. I dont have the same crew as we had for so many years at Princess Anne (except for Manny H, who has been with me since 2004), but Kassi Nicole Gulliford has been with us a good while now and Ryan Gerber (FMC Alum) has worked with us before, and Nigel Kher and Bret Cadle return having joined us for the first time last year. Grace Chin is an exciting addition to our instructors this year, coming to us with a back-ground with the Santa Clara Vanguard. But what is so exciting to me are the number of alums (including Ryan, as I mentioned) on our staff, and with the exception of Ryan, I was their band director! Meagan Cooper has been with us since 2009, Makaela Bartoli and Chris Keane joined us last year, as did Samantha Studebaker and Amanda Gimbel. Joining us this year are Chris Horton, Xavier Pretto, Dakota Corbliss, Stefanie Ward, Drew Chancery, and some clinics with Erica Schultz and Bella Bartha. It is so neat to say go get me a kid... I mean a kid from, like, right now... like, go get me a kid that GOES to PA, right now, that hasnt graduated yet. ;-) (edit: doh! I forgot Jon Hubbelll!!!!! Jonny HUH is with us, too!!!!!!) The show is going to be BA-ZILLY. Whats not to love about Edgar Allan Poe and a great electric guitar player? And a horn-line that blows your face off? ;-) Ill give you a good report on things later in the week. In the meantime: Unity with Pride
