Wine and Beer Aficionados, Were all rested and recovered from Wave One of the holidays, so wine tastings are back on! Were having both tastings this weekend, Friday 4-7 and Saturday 2-5. Next Friday, December 12, were having a high-end wine tasting, the 2nd annual Big Doins! Technically its the first Big Doins at this location but when I moved from the Beechmont store, the event and name came with me. (Doesnt say anything about my ego, right?) Well have four wines that average around $100 a bottle, an impressive spread of hors doeuvres, and Ive been given a significant increase in my map-making budget. The cost for the event is $25 per person, come as you are, no RSVP necessary. If youre not enticed, youve probably never seen my cloth napkin folding of South America. This Friday Im catching you up on some great bottles that I havent had the chance yet to promote. Entire flight: $3.50 Pere Ventura Cava Brut Reserva Penedes, Spain; $16.99 Zingy texture full of bubbles! This spends a decent bit of time in contact with yeast—more than your average Cava—so it picks up a little extra toasty flavor, though its still mostly fruit-forward, dry, and brisk. $1.50 sample Lindemans Reserve Padthaway Cabernet Sauvignon South East Australia; $8.99 CLOSEOUT was $19.99 Fans and critics of Australian wine will find enough surprises here: jammy, ripe red raspberry and fresh blackberry notes are clear, but the finish gets dusty and a little herbal, reminiscent of Bordeaux reds. $.50 sample Gran Passione Salice Salentino Puglia, Italy; $11.99 I hardly meet a Salice Salentino I dont like, much less one thats 100% negroamaro—a statement not frequently made. Often abrasively tannic and dirty, negroamaro is somewhat hard to love; however, this one had enough fruit to appeal to a much broader audience while still remaining faithful to its rustic terroir. $1.00 sample Le Lapin Multiplicity Paso Robles, CA; $9.99 The Le Lapin line is a second label of Rabbit Ridge, a producer of excellent, fairly-priced wines in Paso Robles. Multiplicity is a blend of lots that, for stylistic reasons, didnt make the grade for their standard line. The result is a rich, generous dry red that goes down well by itself. $.50 sample Saturday were having a value southern French tasting! Entire fight: $2.00 Paul Bouchard & Cie Vin de France Blanc Rhone and Loire Valleys, France; $6.99 A blend of seven white grapes, made in an international style. Marsanne and roussane contribute body and yellow tree fruit flavors, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc from Loire (shh, I know thats northern France) brighten and add crispness with a hint of citrus fruit, and the rest contribute structure and harmony to what could become one of our most popular French brands! $.50 sample Paul Bouchard & Cie Vin de France Rouge Southeast France; $6.99 A fan of La Vieille Ferme might want to consider this as a more food-friendly alternative. Its fairly fruit-forward, with notes of black tea and sage, round texture and soft tannin. $.50 sample Gabriel Liogier Cotes du Rhone Rhone Valley, France; $6.99 We had the Ventoux counterpart to this wine a few weeks ago and we sold out at the tasting! This is a similar blend from a slightly warmer climate, which results in increased body. $.50 sample Chateau de Fournas Corbieres Rouge Languedoc-Roussillon, France; $9.99, on sale from $12.99 Corbieres is a large area with many permitted grape varieties; this is a blend of syrah, carignan and grenache. The nose is full of earthy aromas, such as dry leaves, black licorice and pencil shavings. On the palate it has jammy, brooding dark fruits that compliment the rigid backbone with coarse tannin, coffee, and gamey notes. $.50 sample Wine tasting break is over—hurry in!
