Wine and Christmas Food Matches Food and wine matching is really important to get the most out of both the food and the wine. Here are some meals you might be planning to prepare over the festive period and some wine matches that would go great with these. Roast Turkey – with cranberry sauce go for a light red like red Burgundy or Beaujolais, with bread sauce go for a full bodied Chardonnay such as Chilean of Argentinian Roast Chicken – Unoaked or slightly oaked Chardonnay works well with roast chicken. Or why not try a Marsanne Rousanne blend Roast Duck or other game – Try a good quality New Zealand Pinot Noir from Martinborough or Central Otago Roast Beef – Red Bordeaux, the leaner the cut the older the wine, or a New World Cabernet such as Californian Roast Lamb – This goes great with Rioja or why not try a Bordeaux blend from South Africa or Argentina Roast Gammon – Try an off-dry Riesling to balance out the saltiness of the meat. Or go for a fruity Beaujolais Roast Pork – A light Beaujolais or Red Burgundy. For white go for a white Rhone Roast Salmon – Chablis or a more buttery white Burgundy Nut Roast – Try a fruity Chilean Merlot or Viognier Canapés – As there are often a lot of flavours involved I would go or a Champagne or another sparkling wine
