Wings Air New Route Batam-Silangit Wings Air introduced its new Batam-Silangit route by a maiden flight Sept. 7 from Batam Island, Lion Air’s MRO home base. The Lion subsidiary served the route three flights weekly with ATR 72 aircraft with a capacity of 72 passengers. Silangit is the nearest airport to seven regencies in North Sumatra. “Silangit Airport is nearer to Lake Toba, where the tourism potential could be developed, as a result of arrivals of foreign tourists, or passengers on connecting fligths from Batam and other major cities in Indonesia. We see the potential as quite promosing,” said Mahrido, Lion Air Batam station manager quoted by Jakarta Post Sept. 7. He said, Wings Air will serve the new route every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight will depart from Batam at 08.30 a.m. and arrive at Silangit at 10.10 a.m., and the return trip from Silangit leaving at 10.35 a.m. and arriving in Batam at 12.15 p.m. He furrther said, “Wings Air only serves scheduled fligths and not chartered flights. We see a huge market from Batam to Medan, so the potential to Silangit is quite promosing, because most ot the passengers traveling to Medan from Batam have to continue their journey to Tapanuli by bus.” Mahrido added, the new route is also aimed at targeting transit passengers and developing the tourism potential in Lake Toba. On Batam potential, Dwi Djoko Wiwoho of Batam Free Trade Zone Management (BP FTZ) and One-Roof Intergrated Service (PTSP) director explained that his agency would like to expand Batam’s Hang Nadim Airport. Currently the airport serves various direct routes connecting Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan. He said, Hang Nadim Airport currently has a capacity of 3.3 million passengers annually, with the expansion project plan, it has a capacity of 8.3 million passengers. The airport on Batam Island neighbouring Singapore, has a runway stretching more than 4,000 meters, was built by BP FTZ. It is the only commercial airport managed exclusively by the agency, as other airports in Indonesia are managed by state-run airport management firm Angkasa Puta I and Angkasa Pura II.
