Wings Over Scotland has reached an all time low with this vile petition against Gordon Brown MP. I thought about whether or not to share this as it really is a step too far and a personal attack on one of the greatest politicians that this country has ever seen. Gordon Brown did more for child poverty across the UK than any other Government since the Attlee Government of 1945 and yes they could have done more but couldnt we all have. I know this because I lived in a working class scheme where people that had never worked got jobs, working class people went to college and university more than ever before and the minimum wage was introduced. I know this because I lived it. Since 2010 Gordon Brown has earned millions of pounds from speaking engagements etc and has donated every penny to charity, unlike Tony Blair who has allegedly kept it all to himself. There is not one nationalist politician that could lace his boots or that has achieved anything near what he did as chancellor and as Prime Minister and if any of you are reading then dont even attempt to make an argument that he was the cause of the global banking crisis, have heard that one too many times. I have not posted much since the referendum because I do not want to be part of a Facebook world of hate and blame, that is not why I have been involved in politics since I was a teenager. I prefer to do my politics with real people in West Lothian and beyond to try to create a better place for us all to live together. Last night I attended an event in East Whitburn organised by Jan Lumsden. It was about the miners strike, that politicised Brendan Moohan and I. We watched a film called Still the Enemy Within and it was one of the most moving and powerful films that I have ever seen. It was funded through crowd funding by miners that were on strike for over a year; standing up for what they believed in and fighting for the future of their communities, not just for their own jobs but for their childrens and beyond. For that they were beaten jailed and sacked, Brendan being one of them. The film reminded me of the struggle but also of the solidarity. Women and men standing together with their children as equals. Scottish miners supporting English and Welsh miners and vice versa. Fighting against the evil of Maggie Thatcher and the Tories. The Tories are the real enemy not people who voted No, The Labour Party or Gordon Brown. There are many things that Labour has done that I do not agree with but that is called democracy. Some may not like the Labour Party but that is your right because that is the country that The Labour and Trade union Movement has fought for and won over centuries. Since the referendum we have seen a rise in jingoism that refuses to accept that the people of Scotland voted No because they were not convinced of the Yes argument. They were not misguided or duped into voting No, they voted with courage and conviction. It was not only Yes voters that educated themselves and got active, I met hundreds of new political activists that campaigned for No. Their new found activism was no less positive than anyone who chose to campaign for a Yes vote. The politics that I want to be part of is about changing the world for the better, like the miners wanted, to create a more equal and caring world where different opinions are welcomed and encouraged because that is what creates a healthy society. My politics are about fighting the real enemy of the working people; The Tories NOT Gordon Brown or the Labour Party. My politics go beyond donating to food banks (I do this and more just dont write about it on Facebook). My politics are about eradicating food banks and the poverty that creates the need for them, I happen to believe that the best way of achieving this is to be part of the UK and through the Labour and Trade Union movement just as Gordon Brown does.
