Winston Churchills only surviving and youngest child, Mary (Soames), died last week on May 31, at 91. She signed her letters to me Mary Soames, forgoing her title of Lady Soames. She was generous with her time while I was writing The Last Lion, answering questions Im sure shed been asked dozens of times before, and a few that she hadnt been asked: What did you give your father for his birthday? Her answer: A carnation corsage because he already had everything else. Seventy years ago tonight, as the Atlantic storm that pushed D-Day from June 5 to June 6 pummeled England, Mary Soames kept her station as commander of an anti-aircraft battery in London. She was just 21, and had been firing AA guns for three years. She was as brave as her father. So, another hero gone, and another toast raised to one who was there: To Lady Soames.
