Winter Wheat Harvest Begins submitted photo of harvest near Mitchell As we near mid-August, combines are becoming more of a common sight on fields in southern Manitoba. Kevin Peters of HerbSigWill Farms near Randolph says they are well on their way with their winter wheat harvest. Peters notes theyve got about thirteen hundred acres of winter wheat, which makes up about a quarter of their total acres. Peters says theyve already harvested about thirty per cent of this years winter wheat crop, and with favourable conditions, they should have things wrapped by mid next week. Yields have been quite good, reports Peters. Maybe a bit of a surprise how decent they are. He says theyre seeing about eighty bushels per acre, which is similar to what theyve had in recent years. Peters notes there are spots on their fields that had moisture issues in spring and yet it seems those areas have come through okay. He adds the hot, dry conditions the last few weeks helped the winter wheat ripen and enabled crops to dry down more quickly. For the other crops, he says the weather has allowed them to recover from the high moisture levels in late June. While Peters says recent weather has been great for harvest, he notes more rain right now would be good for corn and soybeans. Those crops have a long growing season yet ahead of them, he says. Our soybeans seem to have a lot of potential yet. Canola might be sort of our biggest challenge of the year, its seen the most stress from the moisture.
