Winter proper to arrive? Just a brief post regarding the outlook further ahead. After the spell of rain and briefly milder temperatures clears early Thursday, we will be left with quite cold and showery conditions, although there should be some decent spells of sunshine. Still breezy at times, but winds easing from those seen Wednesday night through Thursday. There will also be the risk of frosts and icy stretches where skies clear. For the latter part of the week and over the weekend the showers will be mostly in the north and west, and wintry at times, even to some low levels and areas quite far south. Eastern areas probably seeing the driest and brightest conditions, however a few wintry showers cant be ruled out here and there is also the threat of some rain pushing into far south/south eastern parts of England over the weekend, perhaps giving some sleet/wet snow on its northern edge. Although confidence on that is low at the moment. Into next week confidence in the detail is low, but it looks like we will keep the quite cold and showery conditions, with the potential for further sleet and/or snow for some areas at times, even to some low levels and areas quite far south. We may begin to see winds switch round to the east, bringing the risk of wintry showers to northern and eastern areas of the UK, with western areas probably seeing the driest and brightest conditions, although here too some wintry showers or longer spell of sleet/snow look possible at times as systems trying to push in from the north and/or west. Potentially the longest run of below average temperatures since August 2014. Not record breaking cold by any means, but the increased risk of frost, ice and some sleet and snow.
