Winter thaw is complete, and spring is pushing her way into the woods. One of the surest signs of this is the return of life on the Raritan River in North Branch Park. Stryder and I decided to take a late day stroll on our favorite path today, killing time as we waited for our next appointment. I was pleased with the number of Killdeer that had returned to the field, squeaking awkwardly as they darted about the geese, every once in a while falling over with a broken wing bluff. But, the highlight of the afternoon was spying this young Great Blue Heron perched defiantly, and in the wide open on the opposite shore. Stryders presence would not shake his bravado, nor did my belly crawl along the bank to get a closer shot. Finally, his claim staked; he gave me a sideways glance and flew off to find his next meal. I love springtimes renewal. The return of old friends from winters retreats is testament that even the coldest and longest winters of our lives will be renewed, as long as we take time to allow them too. I hope you enjoy it.
