Winter weather to whack Rockies, Plains A cold front pushing south from Canada and a storm sailing down the West Coast from Alaska will snap the northern Rockies and Great Plains from autumn splendor to winter wonderland within a few hours Sunday. Meantime, the early line on weather for Halloween shows nothing too scary for trick or treaters. Showers and sprinkles, perhaps, for many cities across the country but not too much to dampen spirits. One of the seasons first Arctic blasts is expected to pile as much as a foot of snow in the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies, National Weather Service meteorologist Nick Langlieb said Saturday. The northern Plains will see as much as seven inches. In Great Falls, Mont., where Langlieb is based, highs in the upper 60s under sunny skies were expected on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon, rain and snow will fill the air and the temperature will drop into the 20s by night. Our first accumulating snowfall in the Great Falls area usually occurs in the third week of October, Langlieb said. So, winters right on schedule. This storm likely wont set any records as it moves through Montana and Wyoming and heads east. And it wont produce an extended period of cold weather, Langlieb said. Places such as Minneapolis might see a few flakes Monday and Tuesday. Halloween — or Thursday for non-ghouls — looks to be fairly good for collecting candy across the country.
