Winters wind makes access to Borden Flats Lighthouse very - TopicsExpress

Winters wind makes access to Borden Flats Lighthouse very challenging December-February. Any day that the harbor transitions to a sheet of glass, provides an opportunity to inspect and clean the station. As with all light stations, Borden Flats has its unique winter weaknesses. The caisson that was added after the 1938 hurricane has seen better days. Each winter, the freeze and thaw cycle degrades large sections of the concrete cap. The winter before caused 90-bags in concrete damage. So far this winter, we are only up to 2-bags. Being a lighthouse keeper is fun, but keeping up with Mother Nature can be physically and mentally exhausting! We were able to capture this great sunset photo this afternoon. The lighthouse is illuminated through a VRB-25 rotating beacon with a 1.05amp bulb. This lens will soon be retired and forgotten.
