Wisdom Wednesday: Vitamin D Do you know how important vitamin D is? Without it your body can not absorb calcium. It protects against muscle weakness and it helps regulate the heartbeat. It also helps prevent and treats breast and colon cancer, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and hypoglycemia. It enhances the immune system and is vital for thyroid function and normal blood clotting. The most important form of Vitamin D is D3 which your body makes when your skin is exposed to the suns ultraviolet rays. The reason why it is so important is because it is considered active right away. The other forms of vitamin D you get from food or from supplements are not active until they go through the liver and kidneys. If you do not get enough sun exposure you should still eat the right foods and take enough supplements for your body to be healthy. Some of the foods that have vitamin D are: Fish liver oils, fatty saltwater fish, eggs, butter, cod liver oil, egg yolks, halibut, liver, milk, oatmeal, oysters, salmon, sardines, sweet potatoes, tuna, and vegetables oils. Always make sure that when you take vitamin D you also take calcium so your body can utilize it. So what this all comes down to is this, get out in the sun as much as you can before you apply sunscreen, at least 15 minutes. Your body needs the vitamin D and sunscreen blocks the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
