( Wisdom of the Human body) : The venous return of the upper limb begins by the dorsal venous arch on (dorsum) of the hand and gives rise to the cephalic and basilic veins which gradually turn to the ( front ) of the upper limb . If that arch was in the palm; venous drainage would be impeded when one is making a fist or a grip. Again if the two veins maintain their course on the ( back) of the limb ; venous drainage would impeded during sleep for example with stasis of blood resulting in edema and even thrombus formation.
