Wise words on diet from the Peaks Group I hear and read a lot about miracle appetite suppressant pills and supplements. I for one rarely get a new client who overeats. They may over eat the wrong macro nutrient (more protein or fat then they need and too few whole food carbohydrate choices), but they are often if anything under eating for their activity level. Yes! TRUTH. As athletes or non athletes, fuel and nourishment are important. Taking in 1000-1300 calories a day is not going to help your daily energy levels for daily life or help you stay lean in the long run. Why? Simply put, when you starve yourself (which this low calorie intake would be, especially as an active person), you will at some point have to break down protein in your muscle and tissues in order to convert it to carbohydrates for energy for the body to use (yes this can and does occur when you are low on carbohydrate stores). OVER TIME you will lose muscle and as a result you will lower your metabolism as muscle is a metabolically active tissue requiring energy to sustain itself. The LESS MUSCLE YOU HAVE, the less calories per day your body burns at rest. MUSCLE HELPS KEEP YOU LEAN! SO KEEP YOUR MUSCLE! Even as an endurance athlete. Not bulk..just muscle. The key to your ideal race weight is not to suppress your appetite! Its to fuel your body with the RIGHT amount of fuel at the RIGHT TIME for your activity level. Often athletes are under fueling and never reaching their goals of both performance and weight as a result. They need the RIGHT amount of fuel. If you are fueled you can TRAIN HARDER, RECOVER BETTER AND TRAIN HARDER AGAIN! Positive cycle . This will make you leaner and stronger. Alternatively, bonking and having some good workouts and some crappy workouts makes it hard to get POWERFUL and lose weight as you likely burn less calories overall and cant push as much power due to poor fuel. Not to mention...what a mental cycle of feel great feel weak feel great...feel weak. Not positive. Out with the appetite suppressing pills! Its about fueling with whole foods, good timing and taking in enough fuel to allow you to both perform AND be healthy! Finding that perfect ratio for you is the key!
