Wishing all our members and Women Leaders a fabulous Christmas - TopicsExpress

Wishing all our members and Women Leaders a fabulous Christmas break and a Happy New Year! We’ve had a busy Michaelmas term! So here’s a round up of Michaelmas term! The beginning of October saw WLT entering its second full year as an LSE Students Union Society! Aiming to build on the 250 member base from the previous year we connected with more women leaders on campus fresher’s fair. This was our first time speaking to the student body and we wanted to make our first impressions count! Whether you wandered past our stall or saw me running around campus with about 30 balloons we hope we empowered and encouraged you to join our society and network. WLT aims to build a strong and diverse network of aspiring women leaders. Through a series of guest-speaker events, leadership workshops and mentoring opportunities, the society seeks to connect women from different sectors and encourage a culture of leadership and active participation. By the end of the two day fresher’s fair we had just over 300 members! An encouraging start to a new year. And Week 2 saw the inaugural WLT event, our meet & greet event! With 150 Women Leaders in attendance it was definitely a squeeze. This was an opportunity for you to meet us and see what our society stands for and aims to do over the coming academic year. Our first social was an absolute hit with WLT taking over Dirty Martini, living up to the ‘work hard, play hard’ motto. Week 3 saw the opening of the SSH builsing, where myself, SU General Secretary Nona Buckley Irvine (Host) Gee Grayson (SU Woman’s Officer) Rowan Harvey (Womens Rights Advocacy Adviser for ActionAid UK and a Governor at the LSE) Asiya Islam (LSE Equality and Diversity Adviser, Writer/Journalist) Zoe Olukoga (President of the Women Leaders of Tomorrow Society 2013/2014) were invited to discuss the challenges and priorities for women in London in the coming decade. A special moment in LSE history where womens issues were openly discussed with the public in the new Students Union building! A personal highlight for myself. We’ve had some fabulous events over the past few weeks including UBS coffee morning where business representatives sat down with LSE WLT’s and spoke about women’s issues in the workplace. UBS and WLT also hosted an exclusive Women’s dinner with LSE alumni. Unlock your potential was an absolute success, a carefully planned and engaging event, Unlock Your Potential was a rare opportunity for women to learn from experts in the art of building confidence, personal branding and self-awareness to help drive your career forward. After chowing down our share of pretzels and Chardonnay, the Women’s Network Launch commenced with LSESU’s Women’s officer, Gee Linford-Grayson, giving an opening speech and introducing four key speakers from the LSESU, as well as acclaimed journalist, Reni Eddo Lodge. Not one moment was wasted as each speaker tackled the steps need be taken as women to emerge as the next generation’s leader. Here is a quick run-through of our awe-inspiring women speakers: 1) Freelance journalist with works published in The Guardian, Reni Eddo Lodge 2) Fawcett Society’s Ava Lee 3) LSE Equality and Diversity advisor and features editor for The F-Word, Asiya Islam As a representative of the #LSEWomen, the Women’s Network will be built around a hub from hosting talks with powerful and influential women, to activities designed to enhance confidence, as a part of career development. Additional activities will include fairs with company representative from all walks of life. For week 8, we took our first society trip to the London Design Musuem to look at the Women, Fashion, Power exhibition. This was perfect for our WLT- fashionistas as it displayed the transition of fashion throughout the years and the influence of practicality, the change of women’s roles in society and its development into self-expression. Week 9 saw us introduce Dr Connson Locke, a lecturer in Management. Her research draws from social and cognitive psychology to focus on leadership, power, and influence in organisations, in particular, leadership presence, adaptability, upward influence, and nonverbal communication. A personal highlight of my term was hearing her speak about ‘How to become a future leader’. This term we also introduced our WLT coffee mornings where we informally talked about women leaders, news and personal experiences over delicious Krispy Kremes and Lattes. This was an excellent opportunity for us to meet our brilliant members that make our society. If you missed out on our coffee morning, do not worry, we’ll have plenty more opportunities for you to meet the rest of our WLT Community. So as we have 4 blissful weeks of non LSE thinking, I hope we can all re energise and motivate ourselves and let 2015 be the year we unlock the doors of success and unblock avenues of opportunity and dare to make a difference. We look forward to seeing all 464 of you in the New Year. So here’s looking forward to 2015 and may it be full of ‘Kicking Ass.’ Festive Wishes, Ani Women Leaders of Tomorrow President
