Wishing my Pa was here to celebrate this Veterans Day. To this day its hard for me to wrap my mind and heart around everything he was. This profoundly patriotic man who fought in the Battle of the Bulge for his country was an absolute FORCE in the face of anything he believed to be injustice! I think often of his character and his legacy. He was the rock on which I have tried to build the foundation of my life on. I want to be the kind of person that would make him proud to call his granddaughter. He was so many things...courageous and strong but extremely humble. He was honest, hard working, and tough as nails but somehow always managed to treat me with the gentleness and care as if I were a porcelain doll. He was my protector, to my little eyes he was an invincible superhero. He was my toughest coach and my biggest fan. In his presence I was safe, loved unconditionally and forever challenged to be the amazing person he already believed I was. When I think back to when I was a little girl there is one tune that will forever be the soundtrack for that safe place Pa created for me. Beautiful dreamer was the song he played over and over on his guitar. Hearing it always reminds me of that awesome feeling I had as a child when I was in his presence. My grandfather did not often speak of what he went through in the war. I dont know if this was because he was such a humble man or maybe it was because he was a protective man and wanted to shelter those he loved from the terrible experience he had to endure. Maybe it was just for reasons that he knew I would never understand. Whatever the reason, I cant imagine the kind of sacrifices he an others had to make and continue to make so we can be where we are today. I only know I am grateful. Thank you Pa and thank you to all the men and women who sacrifice themselves to keep the rest of safe! Happy Veterans Day! Today we honor you!
