Witenagemot Like many, my primary-school teacher, Miss Evans, and my history teacher at secondary school, Mr. Hodgkiss, both mispronounced witenagemot as /ˌwɪtənˈɑːʒəməʊ/ as if it were some snobby Froggy word, instead of /ˈwɪt(ə)nəjəˌməʊt/. If they had pronounced the word with a full-bodied rustic accent, Im sure it would have fired my fascination and maybe I would have become interested in the Angel-Saxons thirty years earlier than I did.
