With 4 weeks to go till my next comp, I thought Id share a bit about my first Comp in Townsville, cant believe it was only in feb-feels like a lifetime ago. After powerlifting for 5 weeks Katrina suggested I enter a comp in Townsville to see what its all about. There were a couple others who were keen but in the end it was Katrina & I who made the long drive. I remember walking into The Art Of Strength gym & thinking what the hell are you doing here Cass lol. Weigh in was straight up...as a female this is confronting at the best of times let alone everyone knowing those magic numbers. 71.5kg came up & man am I stoaked, last time I saw those numbers I was pregnant with Tyson! Nothing really prepares you for that adreneline rush when you step onto that platform arrrgh now I have to remember how to squat again...I nail my first one 75kg it felt easy! Next the bar is loaded at 82.5kg a pb for me & again I nail it. My last one Katrina suggests 90kg & my mouth drops lol shit I cant do that is written all over my face. With her assurance I nail it, whoohoo another pb! Benches next, my first one is 42.5kg & Im really nervous about the pause on my chest, being my first time Im not sure how long theyll make me wait but I push it up no worries. Same with my 52.5kg lift, Im starting to relax now & my confidence is growing. They load the bar at 57.5kg, my excitement turns to suprise when I cant lift it??? After a small ego adjustment & a few choice words I have to shake it off because I still need to deadlift.I learnt a valuable lesson & Im grateful it happened in my first comp-dont get too cocky, things can go very different on the day. Finally, warm ups for deadlifts, my fav My first lift is 125kg, haha too easy & man it felt good. Now the fun lifts as Katrina calls them. The bar is loaded at 135kg, another pb if I get this so Im excited to see how it feels...yes I pick it up! Now Katrina suggests 150kg, you can imagine my reaction- holy shit this was my goal for the end of the year! She says Cass I believe its in you, I walk away to compose myself and Im actually talking out loud saying bloody hell Cass you better pick this up I take a deep breath & the last thing I remember thinking as I step onto that platform is imagine how proud Ill make my hubby, kids, brothers & Katrina if I pick this up. All this in a quick thought then my mind went blank & I just picked it up! OMG I couldnt stop smiling & in that moment I knew this was a sport I was coming to love & wanted to excel in. I ended up qualifying for the nationals in Melbourne the following month. Pretty exciting to fall into a new sport at 38 & just know its for me. Now nearly 10mths later Im 39 & representing a fabulous country in a sport that I love :)
