With Great Mood, SONYO Welcomes the International Youth Day—12th August, 2014 (Theme of the year: Mental Health Matters!) PRESS RELEASE (SONYO Media, Hargeisa)—Today is the Day demarcated as the International Day of Youth (IYD) and for that regard; SONYO Umbrella commemorates the Day with great mood that reflects from the feelings of Somaliland’s youth population. Somaliland National Youth Organization (SONYO Umbrella) hereby addresses its best wishes to the youth of the world and the youth of Somaliland in particular. In addition, it’s the Umbrella’s hope that the youth of Somaliland will celebrate for the next year’s IYD by enjoying with peace, stability and sustainable development that can lead them to remain as contributing participants in the collective efforts of consolidating Somaliland’s democracy and state. This year’s IYD comes about in a situation in which the youth of Somaliland enjoy the great fortune of living along with the peace, stability, democracy and the freedom—that Somaliland hardly-earned and wrote indelible blood; and that Somaliland still pursues as realities on its ground. However, in this meanwhile, the youth of Somaliland—as the young men and women of many other nations in the world do—struggle with the hard hits given to them by the social, economic and political challenges that impede from any meaningful realization of sustainable empowerment and effective engagement. In this regard, SONYO Umbrella believes that solutions for all problems and challenges, that Somaliland youth encounter, can be made workable if the collective efforts and the good hearth of all stakeholders including government, youth CSOs, private sector and donors are put into place. The theme selected in this year for the commemoration of the Day really makes SONYO and any other concerned institution empathetic in the sense that it relates to the real context of Somaliland as there is a significant number of youth who are mentally-challenged and who live in quite ill conditions. In this regard, SONYO urges all stakeholders to take into account the importance of helping those who are mentally-challenged and in a situation that calls for an immediate intervention. As per the Strategic Plan of SONYO Umbrella, helping youth communities—who are struggling with mental health problems—accounts as a top priority. As a result, SONYO Umbrella has recently provided a financial support to the Hargeisa Special Needs Children School. It is the Umbrella’s commitment to continue such magnificent interventions of helping mentally-challenged youth and children living in Somaliland. SONYO believes that the challenges of unemployment, frustration, inadequate access to livelihood opportunities, etc. pose mental health problems on the youth living in Somaliland. Therefore, it is an urgent need to put our hands together; unite our initiatives and potentials; and stand up for fighting for a better future for the youth of Somaliland—who are those whom we expect to take up the existence and the persistence of this nation-state. SONYO Umbrella is pleased to officially confirm the ongoing initiatives that are aimed at promoting the youth for a better Somaliland. Among those initiatives, there is a recently-announced Fund for the development of the youth. The president of Somaliland endorsed the initiative of establishing an effective National Youth Development Fund and thus announced officially by calling for the support of all stakeholders. To build on those initiatives and ensure the components of process, ownership, impact and sustainability, SONYO Umbrella plans to organize a stakeholders’ conference and youth forum in this year so that a comprehensive roadmap for the empowerment of our youth can be put into place. SONYO Umbrella appreciates all efforts devoted and all interventions undertaken by the youth sector stakeholders operating in Somaliland. With strong voice and kindly appeal, SONYO calls for all stakeholders upon committing their resources and energy to the promotion of Somaliland’s youth—who constitute a larger segment of country’s population. Eventually, SONYO presents its affection and best wishes to its dutiful member organizations, honored youth communities and the young generations around the world. With strong faith and good hope for the days to come, we pray for youth agendas that count and young men and women who are inspired, empowered to their potential and engaged as critical participants in the processes of development; decisionmaking, peace-building, democratization, human rights advancement and state consolidation!
