With Mr. Brashear’s backing, Mr. Leisser wrote a letter to Mr. Carnegie in 1911, detailing how art is related to every facet of life. Mr. Leisser urged him to add a school of design to the institute. The day the cornerstone was laid, they told me I was the father of the school, Mr. Leisser told the Post-Gazette in a 1936 interview. The School of Applied Design, finished in September 1912, included departments of dramatic arts, music, architecture, painting and illustration. Notable alum include: Ted Danson, Holly Hunter, Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell, Joe Manganiello, Judith Light, Patrick Wilson, George Romero, Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Rob Rogers, Henry Mancini, Raymond Kaskey, Burton Morris, and many more. Wow! What a legacy to leave!
